HISTORY:

1984

Natalia Romanova was born to Alian and Dasha in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad). Natalia had two older brothers, Dmitriy and Aleksandr, whom she adored. The family was a poor family, but they were happy.

1990

There was a time of unrest as Russia struggled with the transition from the USSR to the Federation of Russia. Times were hard for everyone, but it was when the riots broke out, and buildings were destroyed in Military quells that Natalia lost her entire family. At six years old, she had lost everything.

1993

At the age of nine, after having been kicked out of every foster family and group home she had been in for fighting (she claims that it was all justified, thank you). Natalia was sent to the Red Room Academy.

At the Academy, Natalia was trained alongside other little girls to become children spys. Natalia had the aggression and the drive, it wasn’t hard to manipulate her into willingly put her all into this project-- she had been told that she would be able to seek revenge on the people who were truly to blame for her loss and she was too young to really see through their lie.

1999

At fifteen years old, Natalia graduated from the Red Room Academy. To prove her loyalty to her mission, Natalia had to execute an innocent man and agree to complete sterilization. At fifteen, full of rage and emptiness, Natalia readily agreed to this and became the Black Widow… she would come to regret both of these decisions as an adult.

2001

By the time Natalia turned 17, she was seen as a Global Threat by SHIELD. Of course, they had no idea that she was in actuality a seventeen year old girl. They sent Agent Clint Barton to eliminate her, and to that date, he had been the only one who had ever been able to accurately track the Black Widow. This owed him a surprising deal of respect from Natalia, and when he proposed that she join SHIELD instead of being killed, she agreed. This led to her becoming his partner through many of his missions. From then on, she took on the more Americanized name Natasha Romanoff with very few people calling her Natalia.

2005-2009

During her time with SHIELD, Natasha Romanoff went on a series of assignments under the name of Natalie Rushman, which included working in accounting to undercover foriegn espionage, working as a model to allow eventually gain access to a handful of wealthy dignitaries. This would eventually help her get a job at Stark Industries where she would work keeping an eye on Tony Stark.

It was during this time that Natasha also came in contact with the Winter Soldier for the first time. She had been attempting to keep a scientist safe, and had put herself between the scientist and her future teammate--- only for him to shoot through her body to kill the man behind her. It wasn’t something that she forgot easily.

2010

Her first mission back from being shot was supposed to be a fairly easy one. Natasha was sent by SHIELD to assess Tony Stark’s fit for the Avengers initiative. She played the part of a pretty little Legal intern pretty easily, only dropping the charade when things began to go sideways after his birthday party. The two began a somewhat rocky partnership until Natasha was able to prove herself and help him with Vanko.

2012

Natasha hadn’t been intended to be part of the Avenger initiative--- she had onl been called in once they needed help recalling Barton after he’d been messed with by Loki. Meeting with the Avengers for the first time put a lot of perspective in place for her. She had seen what the Hulk could do, she had seen the damage that Asgards hard done in New Mexico, she knew what Starks weapons were capable of.

The battle with the Chitauri… that just gave Natasha another lesson on how under prepared for this Initiative. She had two guns and some thick boots though, and she made it through. ”"These are gods and monsters and machines of war we're mixed up with." as she had said to Fury. She was glad that he kept her in it though, as it gave her the family that she needed.

2014

Natasha continued her work with SHIELD, eventually working with Captain America, becoming closer to her Avenger Ally. The two of them uncovered that Hydra had infiltrated them. Of course, bringing down Alexander Pierce leaked a lot of Natasha’s own information which caused her to fall off the grid for some time as all of her covers had been blown.

With no agency to report too, Natasha took the opportunity to become Natalia again for a short time. For a few months, Natasha returned to Russia. She wanted to reconnect with the little girl she once was, she wanted to be familiar with the person she would have been without the Red Rooms intervention. What she found were uncared for cracked graves. She weeded them, and put flowers there, but it solidified that she was just not that girl anymore.

2015

Having gone back to her home, and realizing there was nothing there for her, Natasha dove right back into clearing Hydra bases from their new base within the Newly made Avengers Tower.

During this time, Natasha was falling in love with someone she knew was leagues and leagues too good for her. Nat admired Bruce, not for his strength, but for his peacefulness, for his brains and his dorkiness. It was these feelings for the man inside the Hulk that allowed for her to be so good at calming the “big guy”.

Even in the celebration of Victory, bad things tended to happen, and before much was known they were chasing down an evil AI created by Bruce and Tony. Trying to engage was not as easy as it seemed, when the Scarlet Witch began to mess with their minds.

Natasha was shaken, reminded of the times that she was forced to do things that she didn’t want to in the Red Room. It messed with her mind, even as she tried to keep it off her face. But, Clint took them all home, and it was hard to deal with what could and couldn’t be when faced with her surrogate family.

It had even given her ideas. She told Bruce they could run away together, sharing everything with him about her past. They were both monsters, in their own rights, but they could be happy together. But duty called, and they split amongst each other to find Ultron.

For the Betterment of the group, Natasha allowed herself to get kidnapped by Ultron. She learned information about him, and sent his location to the others, only able to sit and wait until Thor and Bruce came to rescue her. It was then that Bruce told her that they could leave and run away together. But Nat knew that they had to fight… and that meant making him become the Hulk at least one more time.

She just wasn’t expecting him to leave...

2016

Having lost Bruce, Natasha stayed working for SHIELD because it was clear to her that she didn’t deserve any other life. Still, She used SHIELD resources to attempt to locate him or to at least get in contact with Bruce. She was worried, but she did as she always did and buried herself in her work.

Natasha busied herself with helping Steve train the New Avengers. This meant running missions with them and ultimately, for Natasha at least, this meant feeling responsible for them when things went sideways. The damage that Wanda caused was one of the factors in why Natasha had been in favor of the Sokovia Accords, at least, at first.

Things got violent quickly, however, first with the bomb going off at the signing, and then the all out war that broke out between the split sides of the Avengers. Natasha knew that she was right, that Tony was right, that they had killed too many people. But she could see where Steve was coming from… it was trading blows with Clint, and she realized just how much they were all losing in this fight that Natasha reconsidered. She couldn’t stand to see her family tear itself apart.

It stung more than she could express to be called a traitor by the people she cared about, but she had to believe that whatever plan Steve had in his pocket would find a way to bring them all a semblance of peace.

Until then, she would go on the run… again.

2018

Two years on the run, burning through her KGB contacts, Natasha was traveling with Steve and Sam and getting rid of the remnants of Chitauri technology that was still hiding in pockets around the earth. And then Bruce called… she wasn’t even aware that he’d been back. It wasn’t time to dwell, though, as he had only called to warn them that Thanos was a threat, and was looking to gather all of the Stones. The trio met up with Wanda and Vision, to protect him and the mind stone.

  The group made a quick stop at the New Avengers Facility… which was full of bittersweet emotions for Natasha. She was seeing people she hadn’t seen in years… Rhodes, Bruce… they didn’t have time for small talk though, as they had to figure out how to help Vision and how to stop Thanos.

This lead them to Steve taking a small battalion to Wakanda. Natasha isn't quite sure how Thanos found them, but the truth was… they had all underestimated his force. Wakanda had a sizable army, and a near impenetrable force field … Wanda joined the fight. Thor and Rocket and Groot arrived. Natasha and Steve and the entirety of Wakanda faced him… but that hadn't been enough.

Thanos had gotten the stone, and he snapped, the significance of such was strongly felt. Vision was dead.. Shuri and T'Challa, the Royal leaders of Wakanda were gone. Bucky and Sam. Nick Fury. Wanda. Laura and Lila and Cooper and Nate. They had all lost so much in one solitary second. 

  So many people were gone, and more importantly her people were gone. Natasha felt a duty to reverse what had been done, they were the good guys after all.

A month later, Captain Marvel (a resource they had acquired through going into Fury's possessions) found Tony in space. With Nebula's assistance, and Rockets, they were able to track Thanos down and ambush him.

The mad titan was weak. He had done what he had wanted and was paying for it. He informed them that he had destroyed the Stones. They all knew he was telling the truth, and Thor reacted out of rage, ending the titans life.

2019-2023

For five years, Natasha was hollowed out by both loneliness and obsession. After Tony retired and moved,  Natasha used the Avengers Facility to run a more national version of the Avengers which now comprised of an almost entirely different group of people. Most of the Avengers had moved on, and she couldn't blame them… the guilt was nearly crippling at times. But she still checked in with the ones that she could, even sending people to track Clint as she had been unable to reach him.

2023

It was the arrival of Scott Lang, a man who to be quite honest, Natasha had very little faith in, that instilled a new hope in her.  Lang had previously thought to have been snapped and when he told them of his theory… Natasha knew there was really only one brain she could trust with this (okay, two, but Tony definitely had the advantage of not being her one time lover).

Unfortunately, Tony did not immediately share in Steve and Natasha's enthusiasm. Why would he? He risked losing more than anyone if the timelines got messed with. He had a daughter and a life. Still,  Nat knew they owed it to whoever had lost someone, to those whose lives were not made better by the Snap, to their fallen comrades to fix this.

Luckily, Bruce agreed to help him, despite not being as familiar as Tony was in the subject. There… there were accidents along the way, though Natasha wasn't there for all of them. While the modern day myth busters were beating up time travel, Natasha had a more personal call to make. They had found Clint Barton.

  Though he believed himself to be too far gone for redemption, Nat reminded him of his goodness, told him about the plan that would bring back his family. They returned together, and joined by Stark who had solved the problem, began to work on an honest time machine.

  Honestly, the science of it all went a little over Natasha's head, but she trusted Bruce and Stark enough to put faith in their brains. More importantly, her family (the ones left) were under one roof again, working together. More importantly, there was hope again. The team began to research the Stones, what they did, where they had been. Nat furiously scribbled more notes than she likely ever had and together with her favorite science boys, they pinpointed where the Stones were. They could do it.

They split up into teams, with Natasha bidding her friends farewell for what she didn't realize would be the last time. Clint and Natasha departed with Nebula and Rhodes, being dropped off at Voromir in search of the Soul stone.

After scaling the mountains of Voromir, the inseparable duo met Red Skull who knew too much about them. He told them the price of the stone was a soul and they both knew what was going to happen. As the reality of the situation set in, the words that Natasha had told Steve before they departed… Whatever it Takes. After all, she was the leader of the Avengers.  She was the one who was obsessed with righting the wrong. She was the one who wouldn't have kids depending on her if this all worked… and if it didn't, at least she wouldn't have to watch her family fall apart again.

Clint had similar reasons it turns out. And a fight broke out between the long time friends, both willing to sacrifice for each other, both willing to be the soul of the team. Natasha leaped, but Clint grabbed her, barely able to hold her. She said her goodbyes. She was determined. The last thing she remembers is telling Clint that it would be okay as she pulled out of his grasp.

PERSONALITY

For a lot of people, it’s hard for them to trust what they “know” about Natalia’s personality (hell, most people don’t even know her name is actually Natalia). Being a person who makes a living telling lies as effectively as Nat does tend to make people a little uneasy. No one is ever really sure if the emotions, or the actions that Nat puts forward are really her, or someone that she’s pretending to be.

Honestly, Natasha isn’t sure either sometimes, and it’s a little exhausting.
Natalia is an intelligent woman, able to balance multiple lies and whole lives all at once. She is great at spinning stories, and thinking on her feet--- she isn’t as super genius as Tony or Bruce, but she’s definitely more street smart, and great at coming up with plans and back up plans. Another sign of her intelligence is her humor: Nat is witty and sarcastic. Often using humor to distract herself from her truer emotions.

Natalia was trained to take her role as a spy very seriously. She was trained to be strong-willed and disciplined. She was trained to compartmentalize, and to push her emotions into a hidden place within her. She was taught to be aloof and unphased in the face of death and horror, and for a very long time, she was the ruthless, soulless person that she was trained to be. She allows people to believe that she is this person, because it’s simply easier for her.

Since being recruited away from the KGB, Nat allowed herself to show her emotions to the people she cares about (which has, without her realizing, become the gigantic Avenger family). Natalia is surprisingly loyal for a person who made her name betraying others, and refuses to give up on her teammates. She worries for them, and she truly considers the other Avengers (and is several cases their families) like her own.

Having lost her parents at a very early age in a bombing, Natalia knows how hard it can be for the civilians being plagued by the superpowered happenings around them. She is protective of the innocents, and often will do whatever she can to make sure the defenseless get to safety.
